GameCon is featuring a Warhammer 40,000 Tournament
It will be Saturday January 16, 2010. Start time is 10:00 am. Each round will be 2 hours and 15 minutes.
The Schedule is as follows:
Arrive, turn in list to organizer, socialize. 9:00-9:45 am
Welcome announcements, pairings and table assignments. 9:45-10:00
Round 1 10:00-12:15
Lunch 12:15-1:10
Pairing and table assignments 1:10-1:15
Round 2 1:15-3:30
Pairing and table assignments 3:40-3:45
Round 3 3:45-6:00
Awards 6:20 pm
Rules: Warhammer 40,000 fifth edition rules will be used. All participants must have a legal army consisting of not more than 2,000 points. Army lists must be constructed using the most current codex for that army, as long as the codex has been released at least thirty days (30) prior to January 16, 2010.
A legible army list must be presented to the Tournament Organizer prior to the start of the first round. A copy of the army list must be available to each opponent for each game round.
All players must bring a copy of the codex for their army, dice, measuring device, and a copy of the 5th Edition Warhammer 40,000 rules.
Players are encouraged to bring 3 objective markers on 40mm bases.
Vehicle Design Rules and Imperial Armor rules are not allowed. All models must be WYSIWYG.
A specific listing of the armies that will be allowed will be provided at a later date.
AWARDS:
Prizes will be awarded for:
1- Best Overall, which includes gameplay/generalship, sportsmanship, and appearance (of the army not you!)
2- Best Sportsmanship, as reported by your opponents.
3- Best General, as calculated by your game scores
4- Best Appearance, as judged by official tournament judges using a score sheet which will be made public prior to the event
5- Best Background, as judged by tournament organizer using a score sheet which will be made public prior to the event. This may encompass a written manuscript, a specially formatted army list, a special performance of song and/or interpretive dance, or some other method unforeseen at this juncture but it must be observable and measureable by the tournament organizer in some way!

The new Tyranid Codex will not be useable. A Codex must be out for one month before it is useable in a tournament. This is a standard practice in the industry for several reasons which I am happy to outline here.
1- Players who play that army need time to become familiar with it.
2- Players who will oppose the army need to to become familiar with it if they choose to do so.
3- We don't want people buying the codex that same day and coming to a tournament with a book without having read it at all.
For your second question, there is no requirement to have a painted army for this tournament. Appearance will be judged, but appearance will not affect your generalship score, your sportsmanship score, or your army background score. It will affect appearance (obviously) and the best overall. Of course we always encourage players to paint their army to the best of their ability and to base all their models. It enhances the game experience!
Thank you for your quick response. Though I fully understand the reason, and totally agree, sad I won't get to try out the new bugs in this event! :-(
And about the painting, I ask because I am a relatively new player and just haven't had the time to get a fully painted army finished yet, I'm working towards it though as I beleive it's required to get the full feel for the hobby.
Wanted to make sure to ask as I'm sure I'm not the only one who has been unable to attend some events due to a non-painted army.

I am very glad you asked both those questions. I'm sure you helped out more than one person!
If you are new to the hobby, you might consider joining one area 40k Club I know about (and I'm an officer in the club). It is the 40K Fight Club "Legion of the Damned." In the past we have had regular painting nights when a group of us would meet and paint. We are hoping to re-start that again soon. It is a big help and encouragement to get an army painted when you have others around you painting, and talking about the hobby.
Well I tried to send a message to Dave to get into the tourney, unfortunately it failed to send. Its Bryan (from the Freeboota forums)...so if I could get signed up, that would be great.
I suggest the INAT, the people writing them are more qualified then the one guy paid minimum wage to work one weekend every 3 months that GW uses, heck even GW is using INAT for next years Ard Boyz.
ok, I will bring a copy of the Tau, SM, SW, Guard, and main section i think of the inat FAQ (Its 200-ish pages...i cant afford to print the whole thing lol)

Guiltl3ss, If you want a smaller point game, bring your army and ask around. Another option, is create a 40k event in the Scheduler and invite someone to sign up and play against you...
I am certain you will be able to find opponents if you show up. If not, you will have chances to try other game systems out!! There is no downside to coming!!

Steve B. You are totally in Bro! It would help me out if you would login into the scheduler and then sign yourself up for the tournament. If you could do that too, Zeev, I would appreciate it!
So, Steve, I assume you are bringing that BRUTAL Salamanders list you have been posting in the Freeboota Forums?!? It looks like that baby is fine-tuned for some DE-STRUCK-SHUN!!!
When you get here I will introduce you to Zeev, another Freeboota!!

Just a reminder ~ if you are registering for the 40k Tournament, please also pre-register for GameCon so that your place in the tournament is held. Otherwise, we have no way of knowing how many spots are taken!

Looks like you figured it out, Steve, because I just checked and you are a participant...
Here are the folks who have joined the tournament:
Mekel, Jenn, Bryan B., Steve B., wasalater, and Fabio.
Ok, good looks like you got me on there, had me worried for a moment. Doesn't look like we have too many people signed up yet, get out there people and spread the word! We had almost 30 people show up at Ard Boyz last year, where is everybody!?

Good Luck and Good Gaming!
So, does this mean that the Tyranid codex being released the day before the tournament will not be legal? Or can players who have the codex use it?
And just to clarify, there is no requirement of a fully painted army, correct?
Thank you!

One question:
What FAQs are we using.
GWs
or
Adepticon's (INAT FAQ)http://www.adepticon.org/wpfiles/inat/INATFAQv3.1.pdf
I suggest the INAT, the people writing them are more qualified then the one guy paid minimum wage to work one weekend every 3 months that GW uses, heck even GW is using INAT for next years Ard Boyz.

I agree that the INAT is better. I have a copy. I guess I will have to start studying it. Is it hard to use? I don't even know how it is organized.
I will go out on a limb and say that is the FAQ we are using!!
